About
I am a biblical scholar and historian whose interests are broadly social and cultural. My first book is entitled Marriage Gifts and Social Change in Ancient Palestine, 1200 BCE to 200 CE, and was published by Cambridge University Press. In addition to marriage and social change, I have written on such topics as the connection between shame and violence, on the nature of status, on biblical purity customs, and on the work of Mary Douglas. My next large-scale research project will address changing conceptions of masculinity in ancient Palestine. I hope to publish on a wide range of issues in biblical studies, religious studies, and social and anthropological history over the course of my career. I live in the lovely town of London, Ontario with my wife and my miniature schnauzer.
